How To Find Free Books

How to Create An Amazing Living Library for Free

Do you know the secret to getting free books to build an amazing home library at your fingertips?

We live in a digital age and I know many CM purists who would faint at my suggestion but have you considered building a digital living library for your home? I’ve got an amazing library of classic, living books, and I got them all for free thanks to the Amazon Kindle program. Here are some reason’s to consider a digital living library.

You don’t need a Kindle

For the longest time, I didn’t have a kindle to read them on! I had lost my kindle while on vacation and I had no idea where it was so I had to figure out how to read my books without the Kindle. That was when I discovered the Kindle Reading App.

There is instant portability to your library

This app can be put on your phone, your tablet, even your desktop or laptop computer and you will have instant access to your library from virtually any device as long as you install the app onto your device.

I have found it has been a great way to bring books to the park with us for outdoor homeschool days. I just grab my tablet and some food and we can go have a picnic in the park. We love to do a read aloud before going for a romp at the playground. It can spark some great creative play. Imagine reading Alice in Wonderland before the park as a child!

It saves space in small homes

This app was a great way to keep all my books in one place for multiple children too. All our Kindle books are stored in the Kindle library and then I can download the specific books to each child’s device.

In my home, each child has a cheap kindle tablet. I prefer Kindle because I can set the tablet to shut off after they are on it for a certain amount of time. I can also lock them out of games, videos and I can load content to my liking. They aren’t able to load anything or bypass the timed lockout without a password.

This allows each of my children accesses to nearly 400 kindle books and 100 Audible books. Audible has great audiobooks for under $5 and these are perfect for long drives or while we clean.

Free Living Books

Charlotte Mason gave books that inspired imaginations and ensnared the reader “living books”. Amazon has a large collection of these for free. Some of the amazing books you can get to start filling your library include:

  1. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
  2. Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know
  3. The Great Gatsby
  4. Treasure Island
  5. The Secret Garden
  6. Little Women
  7. Great Expectations
  8. Grimm’s Fairy Tales
  9. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
  10. The Tale of Two Cities
  11. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  12. The Jungle Book
  13. The Call of the Wild
  14. Black Beauty
  15. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
  16. White Fang
  17. The Portrait of Dorian Grey
  18. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
  19. Dracula
  20. Frankenstein

You can also find several Jean Henri Fabre books for free, as well as Clara Dillingham Pierson books. My suggestion is to look up some good authors in the Kindle section of Amazon and sort by price low to high!

You can also find a huge list of free living books, though not all can be loaded to your Kindle, on my friend Jennifer’s website. Check it out!

Want to know another amazing secret?

I used a monthly subscription service called Scribed that allows me access to thousands of books for $8.99 a month. This service saves me library fines like you wouldn’t believe. Scribed lets you save book titles like a small library. It also allows you to organize into lists. I keep separate lists for each child’s books and create a list for my own books.

They have a wealth of living books as well. If I had to spend money on only one thing a month for our homeschool this would be a top 3 contender, and that is saying a lot!

Scribd is also able to be downloaded onto a kindle if you are a little tech savvy. They have instructions right on their website.
