Easy and Delicious Grinch Christmas Waffles
Grinch Christmas waffles make a delightful breakfast in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and even on Christmas Eve! They are simple to make and they taste delicious. Kids find them absolutely delightful.
My family is home a lot. We homeschool, my husband and I both work from home. Our kitchen is usually messy but something is always being made, by one of the kids or myself. I find this especially true now that we grow a good majority of our food here too.
I often feel bad that I don’t make the cute little breakfasts or the decorated bento lunches I see on Instagram or YouTube. For me, I just don’t feel like I need to put my energy into creative food when I barely have the energy to plan my meals since I make basically all of them at home.
This was simple enough that even I, after making every meal here at home could handle making it. I say that to let you know my bar is low, really really low. This is a minimal-effort breakfast that looks super cute. Your kids will love them.
This recipe calls for green dye, but I am not a fan of using dye in my food. I prefer to use Matcha, but not everyone is a fan of the flavor of matcha so I have made this recipe both using dye and Matcha for the green Grinchy effect.
Matcha is a powder made from green tea leaves that are grown in shade. The process of growing the tea leaves in the shade takes away the bitterness of green tea but it still has a earthy flavor. Not everyone is a big fan of that. To work with matcha I often add a little bit of vanilla or maple syrup to taste to my recipes. I believe in measuring vanilla from the heart if you know what I mean!
The recipe is below and you can also find a printable recipe card at the end of the post. Some things to note before you make these are that you should use a baking rack to cool the waffles otherwise they might end up soggy.
Another thing to note is that they are delicious so you may want to double or triple the recipe! They go quickly so you can always make a few ahead and freeze them for a later date as well!
Grinch Waffles
Prep time: 10 min
Cook: 20 min
Serves: 5 waffles
Ingredients:
2cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 cup whole milk
2 tbsp vegetable oil (and a bit more for brushing waffle maker)
1 egg
3-5 drops of green food coloring or 1 tbsp Matcha powder
Whipping cream
2 tbsp red sprinkles
Strawberry sauce (optional)
- In a medium-sized bowl mix together dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, and sugar. Stir in the milk, and vegetable oil and add egg and whisk to combine until you get a smooth batter.
- Add a few drops of green food coloring to the batter and whisk, add more, if necessary, until your desired shade of green is achieved.
- If you are dye-free like my family you can use Matcha Powder. This will affect the flavor of the waffles, however. Matcha has a delightful earth flavor that my family enjoys. I do add a bit of vanilla or maple syrup when using matcha in my recipes for a little sweetness to balance it out.
- Preheat a waffle maker and brush the surface with a little bit of vegetable oil. Pour about 1/3 cup batter per waffle. Cook the waffle until crispy for about 3-4 minutes or follow your waffle maker cooking instructions. Cool the waffles on a cooling rack to prevent them from being soggy.
- Serve with whipped cream and red sprinkles, powdered sugar, or strawberry sauce. Enjoy!
